POSTER DESIGN

One piece polygonal WANTED posterS

Having been inspired since my Tokyo poster, I have implemented the same method into something I have never done myself, and that is into detailed anime characters. Since I am caught up with One Piece, I decided to create a series of posters based on the most iconic and my personal favourite characters.

Tools:

*PROJECT STATUS: IN PROGRESS

purpose

To recreate a series of wanted posters using the same polygonal method as well as my own creative thinking based on the famous anime, One Piece, as well as implementing at least one or more Japanese themed design elements, such as typography.

target audience

This will be focusing on both genders aged of all ages as this is an anime that has been with others since its release date and because its popularity grew over the years, more people have grown attached to this so this is perfect for all the OG and new fans of the shows.

Design Strategy

I am using photos found on Pinterest as my stencils because they have more options compared to other sources. I have never done posters with actual characters before so using the images would be a good practice if I were to do something like this again. Using the same polygonal method, I drew each section piece by piece, making sure there are no gaps that will be seen on the canvas because it is hard to tell when working on a coloured background.

As for the background details, I have used patterns based on the character’s abilities because every character share the same skills so using the same pattern on them all would make it look like repetitive. For example, Law’s, Kid’s, Zoro’s, and Luffy’s case, I have used:

  • A spotted pattern

  • a dark pattern based on the personality

  • a pattern that looks like rapid sword slashes

  • an imitation of rubber flinging around

And as a finisher, I put an image of their Jolly Roger in the center of each poster, masked in what looks like a dirt/blood splatter.

Typography

I wanted to add at least one Japanese element just to define its country of origin, so I did a series of tests with all the asian styled fonts in my Font Book, and I actually had some of my friends and family take a vote on which font speaks more of Japan, and after taking a look at the results, I finalized on the font “Shinzoku Brush”, which looks like old fashioned calligraphy. I love using fonts that have an old school or historic vibe, but also have a little bit of a modern taste to it and I thought it would be perfect for this collection of wanted posters. Now of course their names can fit on one side and even if they did, the bottom would feel empty even when they character is covering that side, so what I did is “cut their names in half”, making sure their first name covers the bottom section of the poster.

Now what was left was adding their bounties, and I personally (in some cases) don’t like to use the same font when adding smaller text, so for their bounties, as well as the “Dead Or Alive” message, I also had my friends and family take a vote on some other fonts I had, and I finalized on the font “Crimson Dawn”. Because these are wanted posters, I wanted them to have a little bit of a western feeling to it, like those old fashioned posters we see in western movies, and luckily the style this font had paired really well with Shinzoku as well as what I had pictured in my head; and of course I couldn’t type the bounty symbol, so I used a small image of the symbol to finish it off.

Conclusion

This project has taken me a lot longer than the Tokyo poster because I was making multiple characters but also they are very detailed. I always wanted to do a project related to anime characters because it would be a good challenge. I’m not that good at doing characters from scratch so this project was a good practice to try and learn something new.

I started watching this anime on June 2025 after rewatching the first season of the live action a few days before for fun, and I finished catching up on One Piece on December, and all the scenes I saw from every arc inspired me to do this but also other ideas, which are coming soon I promise. Originally, I wasn’t gonna watch it because of how many episodes there were, but here I am doing this project out of love and inspiration.
