POSTER DESIGN

Tokyo Polygonal Poster

The last time I have done polygonal posters was during my time in college, which was a one time thing. I wanted to jump back into this concept to learn more design styles along the way as a graphic designer and created this poster for Tokyo, Japan.

Tools:

purpose

To use only shapes of any kind to design a poster based on well-known or common architecture from any country, in this case, Japan.

target audience

This will be focusing on both genders aged of all ages, but if we are looking at specifics, then this will be for those who are ages 17-60 because this can serve both as a poster for tourists or a poster for those who desire or have a passion for art in general.

Design Strategy

I am using a photo from Unsplash (C: Note Thanun) to create the pagoda in this piece because it includes a lot of complex details in the structure and in the background and I want to test my ability on perfecting the details and/or even modifying some that can't be visible or impossible to draw.

Typography

After finishing this project, I wanted to add some writing to it because the top looked too empty. I wanted to add a little slogan on top, so I created "Where History Stands Tall" written in DIN Condensed Bold since this was an ancient piece of architecture.

And for the header I wrote "Tokyo" in an ancient Asian styled font called Asian Ninja, and "Japan" in Montserrat with its regular weight; I wanted it to be light enough for it to be readable otherwise it would appear too dark because it's place below Tokyo.

I adjusted the tracking in "Japan" to have at an inch or less of space with the letters so that it could look even with "Tokyo" but also for visual appeal; I have seen a lot of designs with letter spacing and it look so modern and visually appealing so I wanted to use that in this poster.

Conclusion

This design took me at least 3-4 weeks because of its complex details in the structure and in the background, but this was a pretty fun project to do and I now have a new design style to work with. Surprisingly, the process was really relaxing yet meditative, I can't even tell how deeply immersed I was in doing this, even when I was supposed to be on my break. I would love to do this design style again any day, it's probably my favourite style so far. I am pretty sure you will expect my next project to be created in this style, the question is....where, who, or what will it be?
